This is the 30-Days Miss Universe Coverage by Endy. I am very excited to be covering the Miss Universe pageant that will be held on the 14th of January 2023 in New Orleans.
Please remember that my opinions have no influence whatsoever on the final results of the pageant.
BLOG 4/30 - December 20, 2021
As promised, today I will reveal my top 20 pre-arrivals list of favorite contestants for the 71st Miss Universe edition.
It is necessary to remind you all that this list can change as soon as the competition starts when all the participants arrive in New Orleans. I will divide my list into 4: 5 contestants in the top 20, 5 in the top 15, 5 in the top 10 and 5 in my top 5. Seeing that we have not seen all the contestants competing on the same level, I do not think it is fair to me as a judge nor to them as contestants, therefore my choice is to divide my top 20 list of pre-arrival favorites into 4 sections. My judgement is based on my overall impression of the candidates and their ability to communicate clear messages when they speak.
At the end of my top 20, I will also mention 10 other participants who also have my attention but have not made it to the top 20 list yet.
Top 20:
Miss Ecuador’s charm and humbleness is admirable. This tall “Morena” may be that surprise factor that can walk in and simply outshine the big favorites. The more I see from her, the more convinced I am that she will place this year.
Miss Nepal grabbed my attention after seeing the Universe United discussions. She has presence and made sure that she was heard in the group. Miss Nepal is not one of the sash factor candidates, but I foresee that she will capture the judges’ attention, especially in her private interview.
Seeing the success streak that India has had the last years, I will not be surprised to see Miss India in the top 20 finalists, because they obviously know how to prepare their contestants. I did not have Miss India in my initial top 20 list of favorites, but somehow, she is growing on me, since I see a positive development in her styling and recent looks. She has competed against the current Miss Universe before, and thanks to her vast improvement, has managed to win the Miss India title this year.
Miss Honduras has the looks and that sparkle. I noticed a boost of self confidence in her that will benefit her participation in the pageant. She speaks fluent English which is an added weapon for her.
Miss Indonesia can conquer all with her smile and simplicity. In a world full of glam and show, her attitude is a breath of fresh air. I do like her simpler styling more than that traditional Indonesian pageant look. I do hope that she will have a more model look throughout the pageant.
I know that many missiologists have Miss Peru in their top 3 list, but the competition is so strong this year, that the candidates must be able to speak with heart and radiate their passion to their best potential. Miss Peru has a model look that might freshen up the Miss Universe image though. I need to see and hear more for a better judgment, but for now she is still in my top 15.
Miss Mexico does not look like the typical Miss Mexico to me. I like her a lot when she does not wear heavy make-up. I listened to an interview she gave a few weeks ago and was totally surprised by her ability to speak and inspire.
Miss Angola might be one of the quieter ones in her preparations but be sure that she is in good hands! I saw Miss Angola participate in Poland at Miss Supranational and I have also seen her here in the Netherlands, and she has that ability to capture your attention wherever she goes.
Miss Puerto Rico is also ranked high amongst many pageant fans. She has that pageant experience that will help her throughout this journey. I will pay close attention to her when she speaks, hopefully then she will climb higher up my list. I want to see what everybody else has already seen.
Miss Italy is another favorite of many, and she has the potential to go far in the competition based on her model look. What I miss is the pageant girl in her. I hope to see that once she is in New Orleans.
I cannot say Curacao without thinking “Cura-waw”! Miss Curacao certainly has that Miss Universe appearance, reminding me of Olivia Culpo. She is a motivational speaker, meaning that she can inspire and motivate, which is an absolute plus for Curacao.
Jamaica is another country who has been successful in the Miss Universe pageant the last years but have yet to win the ultimate title. I hope that Miss Jamaica can waw us with not only her wardrobe and styling, but also with her speaking abilities.
Vietnam has been working hard and strategically the last years and this year they have a good chance of even winning! It is an extraordinarily intense competition, so I am excited to see her among the rest and see if she can outshine the rest.
Miss Aruba is very dedicated to her Miss Universe preparation. We have seen her travel to Colombia and New York several times as part of her preparations. She is not relying on her looks, because she has been preparing herself mentally, physically, and emotionally for a few years already. She even attended the Miss Universe pageant a few years back and has a picture on the Miss Universe stage, preparing for when it will be her turn to fight for the crown.
Miss South Africa is equipped to answer even the toughest questions, and she will do this with grace and poise. Again, this is an exceptionally tough pageant edition, meaning that the overall performance will weigh heavily, and not only the speaking abilities. I cannot wait to see her development in New Orleans.
To me, Miss Colombia has the best face of the pageant. She has been preparing for this moment for a few years already. Colombia is known for sending great pageant queens, and this year is no different. Miss Colombia will not settle or rest until she achieves her goal, that Miss Universe crown!
It has been a few years since I have seen a Miss USA that could win the Miss Universe title. Miss USA uses fashion to spread her messages. A unique way to stand out among the rest. Everything that she wears has a meaning, and I cannot wait to see what messages she will bring to light during the pageant.
With the new owner of the Miss Universe pageant being a Thai woman, chances are high that this will be an advantage for Miss Thailand, but she does not need it! This woman has that Miss Universe glow that is backed up by a beautiful life story and life purpose. I foresee Miss Thailand being a strong contender for the crown.
Miss Venezuela carries herself as if she is already Miss Universe, and not in an overconfident way at all. She just has that captivating glow and attitude wherever she goes. This has to do with the fact that she is involved in her preparation and cannot wait to show everything that she and her team have prepared. Guess what, I cannot wait to see what she will present either.
Another exceptionally strong candidate from Asia, Miss Philippines is representing millions of Pageant Fans who have been waiting to see her on that Miss Universe stage since her Miss Earth participation. After Miss Earth she has grown and developed into an emphatical woman who can win the hearts of everyone. She had a beautiful glow during her national pageant, I hope to see that glow even stronger on stage at Miss Universe.
I will keep my eye out for these contestants too:
Japan
Dominican Republic
Panama
France
Cambodia
Chile
Germany
Spain
Trinidad & Tobago
Netherlands
I know that my list of favorite contestants will change as the competition evolves, and this excites me. I hope that contestants that are not even on my radar now will be unexpected surprises once the competition starts. Crucial factors will be: Preliminary show presentations in swimwear and gala.
Hopefully, Miss Universe will allow us to listen in on the private interviews (as this has been done in other pageants earlier this year), because this is always that missing component to give the best prediction possible for all you Pageant Fans.
Tomorrow I will be discussing the recent changes introduced by the pageant and the changes that I would like to see in the pageant this year. See you tomorrow!
BLOG 3/30 - December 19, 2022
Did you know that so far only 33 countries have won the Miss Universe title in its 70 years of existence?
33 is not a lot since we have 80 to 90 contestants participating each year. This year 57 out of the 86 participating countries will battle to obtain their 1st ever Miss Universe crown.
In this blog I will rank my top 10 contestants at this year’s Miss Universe that have never won the title before, the so-called “dark horses” of the pageant. Remember that this does not mean that they have never qualified or come close to winning before, it simply means that they have never won the title before.
Will one of these contestants become the owner of the new “Force for Good” MOUAWAD crown that was just presented? I will dedicate a separate blog to the Miss Universe crowns where I will also share my thoughts on the new crown.
But for now, these are my top 10 countries that have never won the Miss Universe title before, but each one of them stands an exceptionally good chance of winning their first Miss Universe title. Just for the record, I based my judgement on 1. Overall impression and 2. Their bio information on the Miss Universe website.
Miss Cambodia is a 24-year-old accounting and finance professional who speaks 3 languages and is the first bi-racial representative of her country at Miss Universe. She loves to explore new places, experience diverse cultures, and learn from other’s success stories. Miss Cambodia is a very beautiful young woman who can give her country a nice surprise during this year's pageant. Seeing her preparation team, I feel that she will not just participate, but that she will fight and battle until she reaches her goal.
Miss Honduras is a 20-year-old model and college student. She is currently pursuing dual bachelor’s degrees in international business and digital marketing. She is part of several nonprofit organizations but feels that she needs to advocate for mental health issues. Miss Honduras hopes to give her country her second classification in 67 years. Miss Honduras is very photogenic and has an American vibe to her. I did lack a bit more self confidence in her during her national pageant, but I know that she has been working hard and wants to bring that crown home.
Miss Malaysia is a 26-year-old who dreams of becoming a scientist one day and speaks 5 languages. She is an advocate for mental health as she herself suffered from anxiety from an early age and faced cyberbullying following her Miss Universe Malaysia win this year. She believes that mental health is just as important as physical health. Miss Malaysia is giving it her all with the wish to bring that first crown home for her country. With a little more confidence, she can surprise us all!
Miss Ecuador is a 28-year-old licensed nurse who loves to sing, paint, practice sports and spend time with animals. She aims to lift the morale and self-love of afro descendent women and to be a model of the history, culture, tradition, and identity of a woman from a working town. Miss Ecuador wasn't initially on my list, but after watching videos from her national pageant and also reading her bio, she can certainly be a deserving addition to the Miss Universe finalists.
Miss Italy is a 24-year-old full time influencer and international model who studied languages, digital marketing, communication, diction and acting. She uses her social media platforms to collaborate with brands that support women in causes such as breast cancer to financial independence. Miss Italy certainly is a stunner, she reminds me of Andrea Tovar (2nd R-up Miss Universe 2016) and also Taryn Mansell (1st R-up Miss Universe 1996). If she can communicate fluently and inspire the judges, she will be one to watch out for.
Miss Vietnam is a 28-year-old ambassador with the Children of Vietnam Charitable Fund which supports children with congenital malformation and diseases in Vietnam. She has challenged herself in many competitions and wishes to use her platform to bring greater, more positive influences on her community and to support underprivileged children and women in Vietnam. I see a lot of similarities with candidates from Thailand and/or the Philippines, which is a compliment. It's time to see Miss Vietnam score big at Miss Universe.
Miss Indonesia is a 26-year-old Fashion Business graduate who is dedicated to assisting disadvantaged communities across Indonesia with literacy programs. She taught English to children in poor neighborhoods in Bali and is affiliated with the Bali Children Foundation, a nonprofit that helps thousands of children complete school. Watch out for Miss Indonesia, as she is equipped to cultivate transformational change.
Miss Jamaica is a 26-year-old undergraduate in Health Sciences. She is currently a registered behavioral technician and therapy provider for children on the autism spectrum. Miss Jamaica uses her platform to expand awareness in the behavior therapy field, so children and their parents and caregivers have access to free or affordable resources and services. Miss Jamaica has a great stage presence and ability to communicate, I do hope that she can keep her styling up to par.
Miss Curacao is a 20-year-old certified life coach who speaks four languages. In 2019 she founded the Light4Change organization to help young people find their purpose in adversity and embrace who they are with full authenticity. Her goal is to be an example of a multifaceted woman who fights for equality, embraces challenges and is fearless in the pursuit of her goals and dreams. Curacao has been doing great the last 7 years, and this year Gabriela has the complete package to conquer the universe.
Miss Aruba is a 24-year-old Master of Laws degree student who has a Bachelor of Laws degree with minors in Business and Tax Law. During the pandemic she founded her organization “BUMP” to help equip young mothers with sustainable resources. Miss Aruba loves to meet new people and discover new versions of herself in diverse cultures. Aruba made it to the top 10 last year after 25 years, and it wouldn't surprise me if Kiara can climb even further up the ladder this year and/or even take home the first Miss Universe crown for the One Happy Island.
In the next episode of the 30-Days Miss Universe Coverage by Endy I will reveal my top 20 pre-arrival favorites to win the 71st Miss Universe title.
BLOG 2/30 - December 18, 2022
You must have heard the term “Powerhouse” being used a lot during the Miss Universe pageants throughout the years, but what does it mean if you are the representative of a Powerhouse country? And who are these Powerhouses for this year’s Miss Universe?
I do not know about you, but just from the top of my head I consider countries like Venezuela, Colombia, Philippines, Thailand, and Puerto Rico as Miss Universe Powerhouses, but is this correct?
Specifically for the Miss Universe pageant, the following countries are considered as Powerhouses, as they have produced more Miss Universe winners since the beginning of the pageant back in 1953:
The Unites States is leading as the Powerhouse country as they have 8 Miss Universes, with Olivia Culpo being the latest Miss Universe from the United States in 2012. But not far behind is Venezuela with 7 Miss Universe titles, with Gabriela Isler as their most recent winner back in 2013.
As you can see, I left USA out as a country that I considered a Powerhouse, but this is because Miss USAs aren’t usually as competitive and/or do not have that large following that the countries like Venezuela, Colombia, Philippines, Thailand and/or Puerto Rico have, but, hey, research proved me wrong!
The list of Powerhouses is as follows:
USA (8 winners)
Venezuela (7 winners)
Puerto Rico (5 winners)
Philippines (4 winners)
Sweden (3 winners)
South Africa (3 winners)
India (3 winners)
There are 9 other countries that have 2 winners each, but the list above clearly shows who the leaders of the pack are when it comes to Miss Universe.
If I were a Miss Universe judge and this year’s 7 Powerhouse candidates were the only ones competing, who would be my winner from what I have seen so far? Unfortunately, Sweden does not have a candidate this year, meaning that only 6 Powerhouses would compete in the Miss Universe Powerhouse edition. So, this would be my ranking:
Divita Rai is a 25-year-old architect and model with a passion for learning. She hopes to use her work and platform to make education more accessible to children, especially girls. Divita has big shoes to fill, as the current Miss Universe Harnaaz Sandhu also represented India. For me Miss India is currently in 6th place because I still feel like I want to see more from her. I want to feel her presence more, but this might also be a strategy to wow us once she is in New Orleans.
Ashley Cariño is a 28-year-old Aerospace Engineering student who dreams of working for NASA one day. She has spent the last 5 years working with children and adolescents with mental health diagnoses. Miss Puerto Rico is a huge favorite of many of other pageant fans and followers and I can see why. She has a very exotic beauty and certainly stands out, but I still miss that extra spark that grabs my attention immediately. During her national costume presentation, I noticed her a bit shy and “toned down.” She might surprise us when in New Orleans for sure.
Ndavi Nokeri is a 23-year-old Investment Management professional who is passionate about advocating for equal educational opportunities for all and is devoting her reign to increasing this awareness. Miss South Africa certainly is a stunner with her main attribute being her calm, but loud voice. When this young woman speaks, you will pay attention! She could be higher on this list, but again I do wish to see that drive in her eyes when she makes appearances. I will keep my eye out for Miss South Africa!
Celeste Cortesi is a 25-year-old real estate student who works with Save the Children Philippines focused especially on curbing hunger and the malnutrition crisis. Miss Philippines has a captivating beauty that is noticed from far. It is like she has a constant spotlight on her, wherever she goes. She is currently in third place on this list, but she can also easily be the winner in this group. If she can convey peace, love, strength and inspire the judges when she speaks, she will be unbeatable.
R-Bonny Gabriel is a 28-year-old eco-friendly fashion designer, model, sewing instructor and CEO of her own sustainable clothing line, R-Bonney Nola. Miss USA is using her unique fashion sense to grab attention. As the first Filipino American Miss USA, she is also supported by Asian pageant fans. Miss USA is not taking her participation lightly, and I expect to see loud and clear advocacy through her Miss Universe wardrobe. Miss USA can also be the winner in this category for sure!
Amanda Dudamel is a 23-year-old fashion designer specializing in fashion sustainability. Amanda wants to convey her message of mindfulness about eco-friendly industry practices and corporate social responsibility through her own label “Amanda Dudamel.” Her profile seems similar to Miss USA’s profile, but what makes her stand out is that in my eyes Miss Venezuela has already taken the role of Miss Universe and radiates freshness, confidence, charm, and poise. This is the same feeling I had when Miss Philippines Catriona Gray was preparing for Miss Universe 2018, when she won in Thailand. Miss Venezuela seems very approachable and genuinely nice. I hope that my feeling about her is correct. If so, she can definitely become the 71st Miss Universe and bring home the 8th Miss Universe crown for her country.
Please bear in mind that this list does not necessarily represent my list of top 20 pre-arrival favorites, as I will reveal my first top 20 list on day #4.
BLOG 1/30 - December 17, 2022
Welcome to the 1st of the 30-Days Miss Universe Coverage by Endy! For the coming 30 days I will be analyzing, commenting, and giving my predictions for the 71st Miss Universe pageant that will be held in New Orleans on January 14, 2023.
For those who do not know who I am, my name is Endy Croes, I am originally from Aruba, but I am currently living in the Netherlands. I am a huge pageant fan, especially of the Miss Universe pageant and I also coach pageant contestants. I am a hairstylist, make-up artist, designer and photographer specializing in beauty pageants.
Let us dive directly into it! The 86 Miss Universe contestants had to provide a headshot to introduce themselves on the Miss Universe website. This is their official first impression towards the public and the judges, as I feel that most judges will not take the time to follow each contestant on their socials from the day of their local coronation and leading up to the final night of Miss Universe.
What did I look at when choosing my favorite contestant headshots? I looked at
1. A modern/fresh take.
2. Simplicity.
3. Hair-, Make-up- and Wardrobe styling that complement the contestant.
4. No distractions from the contestant’s face.
5. No excess digital and skin retouching.
I narrowed the field down from 86 to a list of my favorite 20 Miss Universe headshots. In alphabetical order:
Angola
The main reason I like this headshot is that I can see a genuine and natural emotion in Miss Angola’s face. The white top brings light to her face and compliments her beautiful smile.
Aruba
With the background and top being black, all the attention goes to Miss Aruba’s face. She has a fierce look in her eyes screaming that she is ready to conquer the universe. It would have been a perfect shot for me if the bracelet wasn’t in the picture.
Colombia
Absolutely beautiful! Simple, modern styling, no distractions in the picture. There is little to no skin retouching noticeable to me. This is one of my top 3 favorite headshots of this edition of Miss Universe.
Curacao
Miss Curacao looks incredibly beautiful in this picture. She also used the black and dark top and background to bring all the attention to her face. It would have been a perfect headshot to me if the earrings were a bit smaller, as they are now competing for attention in this picture.
Germany
Miss Germany gives me the same feel as Miss Colombia’s headshot. Simple, modern styling, no accessories, or any distractions. I love the modern and fresh feel that Miss Germany is giving in her official headshot.
Honduras
Even though the picture can be cropped more closer to her face, I love the fresh and modern approach of Miss Honduras. I wish that all contestants would move in this direction in the future with their official headshots. If the lips were a more neutral tone, the picture would also easily be in my top 3 favorites.
Indonesia
Based on this picture alone, I would really love to meet and talk to Miss Indonesia in person. The impression that I am getting is that she is a genuinely nice and sweet young woman with lots of ambitions and dreams. If this picture was taken with a simpler top, it would have been perfect!
Italy
Miss Italy, same as Miss Aruba, is giving me her game face in this picture. Certainly, striking, and impressive! Again, modern styling with feathers to soften her strong features, fantastic job! If only the lighting in her face was a bit more dominant it would have been a perfect shot all around.
Malaysia
As you can see, I love simplicity in attire, posing and styling. A beautiful straight forward shot of Miss Malaysia with no distractions whatsoever. The skin retouching is a bit noticeable, but in comparison to the rest of the group, she is still a standout to me.
Nepal
Miss Nepal also took the dark top and background approach with complimenting styling that does not distract from her beauty. I love the subtle glow on Miss Nepal’s skin in this picture. Nice shot!
Panama
Even though Miss Panama’s picture can be cropped more, and the skin retouching can be a little more subtle, this picture absolutely grabbed my attention. To me this looks like a picture taken by a team of determined professionals who are working diligently to ensure a great pageant preparation for Miss Panama.
Peru
Especially after looking at many perfectly posed pictures, Miss Peru’s picture with the wind effect certainly pops. Great hair and make-up styling, but I would have preferred a simpler and better fitting top to make sure that the facial beauty of Miss Peru is highlighted even more.
Philippines
At first my eyes did not know where to focus, because Miss Philippines’ picture has a few beautiful components in it, but after about 3 seconds I focused on her face. It would have been a perfect picture if her skin was shining a little less and the earrings were a bit smaller. I love the fact that we can see her tattoo, showing authenticity, and taking a step forward in the pageant world.
South Africa
Miss South Africa made sure to show her authentic self, and not the typical pageant contestant styling in her official headshot, and I love it. Seeing that there are many accessories in her hair, I would have opted for more subtle earrings for this picture. Other than that, this is a beautiful picture!
Spain
Miss Spain absolutely nailed it with her picture. She looks flawless with very natural styling and pose. Even though she is 26 years old, unlike many of the other contestants, they managed to make her look younger and fresh and not older. Miss Spain is also in my top 3 favorite headshots.
Ukraine
Those soft curls and striking facial expression did it for me. The contrast with the black and the white also makes this picture work. It would have been an even better picture if the make-up was a bit more natural and if the retouching was also a bit more subtle.
Uruguay
I honestly did not believe that this picture of Miss Uruguay would be one of my top 3 favorites, but after reviewing all the headshots, I have to say that Miss Uruguay took a gamble, and it paid off! Very fresh, modern, great styling and overall great picture that stands out between perfectly planned poses and hairstyles.
USA
This is a strategic picture. Miss USA knows about colors and which colors help you stand out in a group. You can see that this picture was taken using natural lighting which gives that modern and fresh feel to the picture. The fuccia/purple color is dominant, but there is nothing else in the picture that distracts from Miss USA’s face.
Venezuela
Miss Venezuela is owning that shoulder action in this picture. I think that I would have loved the picture even more if she wore a simpler top and/or simpler earrings. Besides that, great facial expression, make-up, and styling. Beautiful!
Vietnam
Miss Vietnam was fluctuating in and out of my top 20 favorite headshots list, but at the end she remained in it. Beautiful picture, but I would have loved it even more if the skin retouching was a bit more subtle, but she definitely gives that Miss Universe vibe in this picture. A great picture to round out the 86 contestants list.
The following 5 contestants also grabbed my attention with their official headshots, but unfortunately did not make my top 20 list:
1. Armenia 2. Belize 3. Cambodia 4. El Salvador 5. Japan.
Bear in mind that this list does not necessarily represent my top 20 pre-arrival favorites list, as this list will be revealed on day #4!
I hope you enjoyed the first of the 30-Days Miss Universe Coverage by Endy. Tomorrow we are going to review the powerhouse countries (countries with the most amount of Miss Universe wins and placements) and see how strong their candidates are for this year’s Miss Universe. See you tomorrow!
